Carline Ray – The Manhattan Plaza News Cover Story (April 1996)
Carline Ray had a most remarkable career in Jazz, performing with legends, as well as at lengendary location throughout her very long career. Highlights include:
Member of the pioneering group The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Playing at the Savoy with Erskine Hawkins, playing at Sweet Basil's with Doc Cheatham, performing with Mary Lou Williams, performing at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Swing University Professor, for The Swing Era, of which I can personally attest, having taught the class with her, was a treasure trove of stories from the Golden Age of Jazz, and most remarkable musician, even in he eighties!
Ray was a multi-talented force in Jazz, on Bass , Guitar, and Vocals. Also notable as the widow of Luis Russell, Louis Armstrong's Musical Director(!), and mother of, the contemporary vocalist Catherine Russell. Ray passed away on July 18, 2013 at the age of 88.
