Overview
Bassist Red Balaban (cousin of actor Bob Balaban) led Sunday jam sessions at a sawdust floor joint in Greenwich Village Manhattan called Your Father's Mustache (that had been NICK'S, a major Jazz outpost in the Swing Era) throughout the 1960s and '70s. The club was originally opened in 1937 and through the years hosted some of the greatest Jazzmen ever, including Bud Freeman, Jack Teagarden, Benny Carter, and Eddie Condon.
The band, Balaban and Cats, often included top Jazz players from Eubie Blake- to Ruby Braff - to Doc Cheatham - to Kenny Davern - and so forth. GENE KRUPA made some of his last appearances here and with such artists. We offer two rare 1972 color photographs of Balaban and Cats at the legendary Your Father's Mustache, and a ticket stub from one of the Sunday jam sessions. In the photo are Herb Gardner, Doc Cheatham, Sal Pace with Balaban. A one-of-a-kind bundling of New York Jazz history!
