Overview
Toward Jazz, the second book by esteemed French author, critic, and historian Andre Hodeir, presents a collection of essays written between 1953 and 1959. One of the foremost Jazz critics of all time, Hodeir's subjects include Jazz criticism, and the stylings of Count Basie and Thelonious Monk. His personal preferences show through ocassionally, but overall it's a well written and readable history of the music (up to 1959). Translated by Noel Burch. Grove Press, hardcover, FIRST EDITION, with dust jacket (damaged on back), 1962.
