Overview
This heretofore UNPUBLISHED photo by the greatest of Jazz photographers, William P. Gottlieb features HAROLD ASHBY, tenor saxophonist. The photo was taken at The Third Phase, a short-lived Jazz spot in 1977. Ashby was DUKE ELLINGTON’s tenor man described by The Maestro in his autobiography as “soul saturated, solo popping deluxe." He was a true Kansas City Jazz man and a disciple of Ben Webster. The photo is in an 8”x10” glossy. Glossies were prepared by the great craftsmen and Newsweek photographer, Bernie Gottfryd.
