Overview
Multi reed artist HAYWOOD HENRY played at the Savoy Ballroom with Erskine Hawkins for 20 years and takes the clarinet solo on the original “Tuxedo Junction” (7/18/1939)!
Haywood grew up with Jo Jones and went to elementary school with Sun Ra!! There first grade teacher was Wilson Driver, Sonia Sanchez’s drumming father. The Haywood Henry Quartet held for at The West End for over a decade. This letter to Phil dates from August 1982 when Henry was in Denver. He signs the letter not once but TWICE! The letter is a unique item in the hand of a Jazz musician who played with the best of them!
